READY, WILLING, and cABLE street electric

April 3rd, 2012

The stage is set, the playlist populated, the cavernous Cable Street Studio fast filling up, and the fizz of opening cans peppering the crescendo of chitter chatter filling the air, when the host takes to the stage. Andy McRobbie – a man with a wit drier than the Atacama Desert, a silk kimono that would look more at home on Gary Glitter’s bedroom floor, and a beer glass that resembles a GCSE student’s woodwork and chemistry fieldwork rolled into one.
Cable Street Electric could just as easily be called Cable Street Eclectic judging by the band names chalked on the board. The acts never fail to surprise – from a dickensian knee-slapping singalong, through West London’s answer to Pulp, to a Japanese cover of The Police – Every Breath You Take.
The setting is sublimely informal, the atmosphere feverishly creative, and the performances as diverse as a Benetton ad. These are early days for Cable Street Electric – but if the first three nights are anything to go by, let alone the passion and creativity of founder Katie Buckett [who has a track record in this field, having previously set up the now notorious Potion Café open mic in Bushwick, Brooklyn] – then it seems destined to go from strength to strength.

The weekly open mic is held on Mondays evenings, alternating between its base in Cable Street Studios [Unit B, E1W 3HB] and a friend’s loft just off Shoreditch High StreetCable Street hosts acoustic and electric performances [amplification available], whilst Shoreditch is purely unplugged. The locations rotate, and more up to date can be found on the Cable Street Electric Facebook page.

Carnival Competition

August 28th, 2011
Here it is – the first batch of the 2011 Capicú sticker, featuring the increasingly popular, yet still just about acceptably cutting edge QR code.
You can get your hands on one at Carnival this year, and to celebrate we are launching a photography competition. The rules are simple: take a photo at carnival (ideally with a sticker in it), use the QR code to visit the website, and email your photo via the link in the top right…
The winning photo will be published on the site, and the buddy Terry Richardson responsible for it will receive a Limited Edition Capicú sweater.

unfiltered ATL

October 11th, 2010

Following in the footsteps of the acclaimed Intense 100 Proof, Belvedere this week launched their latest addition to the Intense family: Unfiltered 80. It launched at the BET Awards in ATL, and like many of the guests [see below], is described – by Belvedere themselves – as full bodied and elegant…

Veuve Clicquot pt.1

October 5th, 2010

I wasn’t the first person to be afforded the privilege of experiencing the magic of Veuve Clicquot during the harvest, and I most certainly wont be the last – but that did not make the experience any less special. The voyage began with a night at Philipe Stark’s hotel Mama Shelter in Paris. The hotel itself was fairly unremarkable from the outside – and not what I was expecting at all – but the interior was far from disappointing. A swarm of Parisian socialites and international business men and women swarmed in and out of the bar, and later restaurant, like bees from a hive. And the decor was, as you’d imagine, cutting edge. Rather than fight for a table in the crowded hotel restaurant, we opted for a late booking at Derrière – a Parisian venture from Mourad Mazouz, the man behind Momo and Sketch in London. The food and decor – by Bambi Sloan – was inspired and delicious.

The next appointment we had was with the first train from Paris to Reims in the morning – via beautifully sunny French countryside. On arrival we were met and gret by the VCP taxi – and soon dropped off at the Place des Droits de L’Homme, the metropolitan home of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin. There we were afforded a private tour of their visitor centre and subsequently their cellars. Although it wasn’t the first time I’d experienced the magnificence of the 24km of chalk-carved caverns, I was awe-struck nonetheless. If ever you find yourself in the north of France, a visit to the cellars is a must. From Stockholm to Salvador, it is literally one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever seen.

From there – and via a tasting of Vintage Rosé – we were accompanied to La Manoir de Verzy – the former home of the master of all Veuve Clicquot vineyards, which is now reserved almost exclusively for entertaining guests of the house. Graced by a warm sun, and saved by the shade of a 200 year old cedar, we sipped Yellow Label, pausing only to admire the vines at the end of the garden – dedicated to the VCP-endorsed Business Women of the Year. Madame Cliquot was, in her day, one of the first women in business [hence the endorsement]. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to start quoting the Suffragetes, but she was a truly remarkable woman.

Lunch was served inside the manoir, and consisted of 3 courses of the finest local, rustic cuisine – paired with a different Veuve champagne. The greatest taste, and in fact honour, was though the opportunity to try a 1993 Bouzy Rouge [pinot noir]. This is the elixir produced by the house of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin but reserved only for blending Rosé champange. So exclusive it is, that Francois Hautekeur [the cellar master who guided us on this enlightening experience] had only ever tasted it twice before in his entire life.

Thank you Veuve Clicquot for bringing champagne into my world. And for bringing me into yours.

better late than never

September 6th, 2010

From day dot I always stated that my ambition for Capicú was to feature the best but not necessarily the newest. Which surely gets me off the hook for posting things later than I should? If the content is worthy. So even though Carnival has recently passed by, I didn’t want to let this TFL poster do so without record. So here it is. There’s no introduction needed, as somehow the imagery perfectly captures the way Carnival transforms the otherwise drab London every year, for 2 of the finest days of the calendar.

un fuerte aplauso

August 3rd, 2010

This Sunday saw over fifty million people descend on Burgess Park, South London, for the largest Latin Festival in Europe: Carnaval del Pueblo. With the aroma of tamales, churrasco, pernil, buñuelos, hornado, and jerk filling the air, and stonewash denim everywhere – the atmosphere was explosivo. Diversity has always characterised the personality of Latin America – and this colourful heritage was proudly displayed at Carnaval. Unsurprisingly the musical melting pot that is Latin music was well represented across the multiple stages showcasing multiple genres. If you didn’t make it this weekend then put the date in your diary now for next year, and if you did – and spot yourself in one of the photos below – then message me to receive a Limited Edition Capicú Tshirt…
