staple design February 23rd, 2009

Few faces can be said to be quite as iconic as that of Christopher Wallace. Without a doubt, there isn’t a single portrait out there as impactful and instantly recognisable by a whole generation of music lovers across the globe than his – and that can be said of lovers of all musical genres. Since B.I.G’s passing, merchandisers have jumped all over this fact in order to line their pockets, and many artists have made him the subject of their creative expressions also – like Obey for example. It is hardly surprising then that there are probably a million and one tshirts out there emblazoned with his face, to be found everywhere from Peckham to Paris, Moss Side to Milan, New Cross to New York City. This example from Jeff Staple’s Spring 09 collection [Staple Design] is a refreshingly original take on the otherwise overexposed subject matter – featuring Biggie’s face highlighted out of lines and lines of his unimitable verses, and complimented by the inclusion of the highlighter itself… an albeit incomparably insignificant, yet almost equally recognisable, icon of our times.

a fighter in the form of a writer February 10th, 2009

We’ve been looking for an out of the ordinary reason to mention DC rapper Wale for a while now, and then along comes this: Wale himself doing his take on K.I.G’s Head,Shouders,Knees,Toes - courtesy of DJ Semtex. If you haven’t heard the original by now [video below, below] you must have been living underground, but Wale’s version is a) slightly newer and b) slightly more interesting – given that it has travelled across the pond [which way is anyone's guess]. Come to think of it, if you haven’t heard THE Original you must have missed out on your childhood like MJ or Usher.
Wale hit hip-hop headlines after his 2007 track Nike Boots [video below], after years of mixtapes featuring music’s biggest names from Jay-Z to Travis Barker – via Mark Ronson – and he has since been accredited with putting DC back on the map. 2 years later, and he still got his Nike boots on…

neon impossible February 10th, 2009

Maybe it’s the juxtaposition of the classical, quintessential symbol of excellence – the rosette – with the fluorescent luminescence that has come to characterise modernity and in recent times contemporary kitsch, or maybe it’s simply the refreshingly original theme to Mulberry’s window on Old Brompton Street that set’s it apart. Make of it what you want, but one thing is undeniable: this is a fine celebration of materialistic excellence, that stands apart from the wash of increasingly generic, uninspiring and generally monotone mood photography that lines most window displays from the West End to Worlds End…

ralph lauren was borin before i wore em January 28th, 2009

I was seriously in two minds about posting this – mainly because as previously stated I actually like Kanye, and this clip doesn’t exactly do him any favours. In fact it simply serves to fuel his critics. I’d even go so far as to say it almost swayed me. Either way, we realised that most people who read the previous post want to see the clip, so here it is. Judge for yourself…
Whether it’s his total lack of humility, the fact that he is so far out of touch with reality, or simply his new haircut that winds you up, there is surely no debate as to his talent as a producer or entertainer - as epitomised by the title of this post, taken from his performance of Bitter Sweet at Def Poetry Jam. Actually that line alone demonstrates both the strength and weakness of Mr West’s character…

what it do, what it does / originality is the key January 25th, 2009

Yes its Jeezy again, and no it isn’t a million miles away from Belvedere’s Luxury Reborn campaign or Kelis’ Bossy video cinematographically, but this campaign to celebrate 60 Years of Soles and Stripes from Adidas is amazing. We saw it at the cinema, before Slumdog Millionaire – which incidentally is incredible, well worth a watch – and chose to feature the ad over the film. Its not only because Slumdog has had more than its fair share of column inches and blog posts recently, and nothing to do with the quality of the film – again it is of the highest calibre – but put simply the Adidas Celebrate Originality campaign just fits the bill better… even if the cast – including Jeezy, Estelle, Russell Simmons, Missy, Meth, Red, and David Beckham – is more mainstream than that of the film…

not just a girl’s best friend January 13th, 2009

Diamond Supply Co. was founded in 1998 by skateboarder and designer Nick Tershay, aka Nick Diamond - and just over ten years down the line they’ve had endorsements from superstars like Raekwon and collaborations including Nike SB and Crooks and Castles [above right]. Yes we know you might be thinking ‘another post about a skateboarder who set up shop and now sells Tshirts’… but fistly Diamond Supply Co. is much more than that, and secondly when the designs look this good they deserve some space.

san fran street glam January 7th, 2009

This HUF 59FIFTY is not just stunning, but practically a masterpiece in itself – the former [above] featuring a red satin exterior and topbill, yellow underbill, yellow button and yellow lining, and a white 3D HUF H logo; and the latter [below] the same but in silver/blue/red.
Founded in 2002 by world renowned skateboarder Keith Hufnagel, as a single shop in San Fransisco - with a vision to bring New York fashion and footwear to the Bay Area, SF - HUF now includes 4 stores across 2 cities (it’s hometown plus LA) and it’s own clothing brand [featured]. With designs like these its easy to see why the customers keep coming back…

the vine bears 3 kinds of grapes January 7th, 2009
according to Dionysus, the ancient Greek philosopher. The first of pleasure, the second of intoxication, and the third of disgust.

He is also said to be the founder of cynicism so it would be fitting of you to think that his quotation isn’t appropriate here. Either way, in our opinion these grapes from Estate Los Angeles are definately of the first type.
