don’t jealous me funky

April 30th, 2009

I’m no music critic and I damn sure aren’t about to pick now to start acting like one - but things are getting more and more interesting on the UK music scene. Skanking has taken some funky twists of late, with everything from the Rolex Sweep to the Head/Shoulders, Tribal Skank and now the Migrane Skank gracing dancefloors - and carparks [see videos] - across the land. This latest offering from T Boy embraces the ever-increasing funkiness of the new dances, with a comic twist. Commentary on the video has centred on the girl at 3:05, T Boy doing it for the African boys, and unsurprisingly the comedy intro ["after going low you want me to go high again - what's wrong with your life?"] but surely the chick with a frying pan [at 2:44] has got to be worth a mention, as well as the fact the whole video was shot on and around campus? It’s mad funny and the track is catchy to say the least. Plus the boys at 4:20 - with their fish slap dance - are practically worth watching it for alone…

alcoholic architecture

April 23rd, 2009

stpauls_jelly_2 The latest project from bespoke jelly mould makers Bompas & Parr is a unique drinking experience dubbed the UK’s first walk in cocktail. Decked in a protective suit, you walk into a breathable cloud of Hendrick’s gin & tonic - created using the same technology as Anthony Gormley’s Blind Light installation at the Hayward Gallery last year. Entry is ticketed and time controlled, and you are kindly asked to breathe responsibly. Beyond making mould-breaking jellies [past projects include: an architectural desert trolley, and a jelly model of Madrid's Barajas airport], Bompass & Parr describe themselves as curators and creators of spectacular culinary events, and judging by the popularity of this event, they are continuing to live up to their self-awarded reputation…

For everybody else who - like me - has well and truly played out A Kid Named Cudi, here is some fresh material from that kid from Cleveland. With his name, face, and music pretty much all over the place right now, it’s a welcomed treat to have a 20 track mixtape arrive on your desktop ahead of the upcoming release of his debut album Man on the Moon: The Guardians…

all the single ladies

100-beyonce-lookalikes-bring-piccadilly-circus-to-a-standstill_1

As part of their promotional competition to win free tickets to see Beyoncé at the O2, Cadbury-owned Trident gum organised a flashmob performance of Beyoncé’s Single Ladies in Piccadilly Circus. The stunt, which was conceived by Initials Marketing, and made reality by Pretty Green, featured 100 girls spontaneously performing the iconic Beyoncé dance in front of startled onlookers. The outcome and effect was impactful and beautiful, even if the Trident brand was [thankfully] nowhere to be seen…

thanks to mugabe this money is wallpaper

April 17th, 2009

This campaign for The Zimbabwean newspaper actually worked out cheaper to print on bank notes than ordinary paper, due to hyper-inflation [symbolised by the introduction of the Z$10 trillion note, worth less than a loaf of bread]. The message is clear, and the execution effective - and the campaign was created in reaction not only to Mugabe’s crippling economic policy, but also his decision to introduce an import luxury duty of 55percent on the newspaper, making it unaffordable to most Zimbabweans. Not content with resisting Mugabe from within Zimbabwe [see campaign], they have also managed to overcome his duty by selling copies of the paper in England and South Africa. Available from most London newsagents…

lacie

For centuries money has been not only the subject of desires the world over, but also arguably the most populist and prolific form of  public art. Beyond this it has also formed the inspiration for less conventional art forms: ranging from the abstract [see One Billion Dollar from Art Marcovici, below]  to more functional forms [see Currenkey from LaCie, above]. This portable USB drive from 5.5 Designers for LaCie comes in brushed bronze [4mb] and silver [8mb], costs $24.99 and $34.99 respectively, and is available via their website

my pockets so heavy that i can’t walk steady

April 1st, 2009

20090205_naolab-naoloop-main_0004

After dipping our toes into the sea of political debate, Capicú is now safely back on the dry land that is aesthetics and consumerism. This beautiful ‘pocket organiser’ from Hong-Kong based Naolab would probably never look quite so attractive after a few days collecting pocket fluff, but nonetheless the Naoloop is hugely appealing. This ‘Ultra’ version [above] - intended for use with everything from cards, contact lenses, and chopsticks to money and mobile phones - is only €19, and available direct from the Naolab website…
