hair today / gone tomorrow

Capicú doesn’t seek to be provocative for the sake of being provocative - but sparking debate demonstrates engagement and interest. However to be completely honest, the furore that was caused by the fix up look sharp post took me by surprise. Subsequent debate threw up some interesting issues, and concluded that whether you like it or not - at least the knife comb was brought into your world through that post.

This knuckle-comb from Kosmos Project will no doubt again fuel scorn and condemnation in the minds of some, but for the rest of us who appreciate aesthetic beauty for what it is - this design does have appeal. Granted, the controversiality of what it represents probably adds to the allure, but as the creators themselves say, the outcome is a ‘controversial and on the other hand very sexy object‘.  For those out there who prefer to dig a little deeper, and concern themselves with the social statement this type of object makes, theorise away…

just another good girl gone bad

May 30th, 2009

The first time I ever heard this track I wanted to hear it again. And the second time I wanted to share it. It wasn’t just the title and lyrics - mama’s little princess gone bad - but Tarrus Riley’s sweet vocal style next to the more youthful and coarser vocals from Koshens added roots/dancehall crossover appeal. Critical acclaim has been rising up around this man in a creschendo, including Jambase claiming that ‘not even ten chariots with horses could stop him’  and AOL music describing him as ‘one of the most promising of the of the second generation of Jamaican reggae roots singers’. Ok so chariots with horses don’t mean much, and AOL music might not be the voice of authority when it comes to reggae artists - but with 15k fans on fb and myspace, and a couple of albums and big hits under his belt already, they can’t be all wrong. Plus, as soon as you hear the track you should agree that Tarrus [and Koshens] is pretty much a big deal. The good girl gone bad acting stush at 1minute57 fits the track to a T…

It’s time for some technology. Or reverse technology to be precise. This feature is definitely one to polarise, and I’m not going to sit on the fence. Yes it’s fair to say that by actually using one of these you run the risk of looking like a cross between an ’80s businessman and a BT technician, but at the same time there is something about it that makes you want one. With guest artist collaborations also available [see Eliza from Hong Kong, below], Yubz phones are almost irresistible. Perhaps it’s the fact they evoke a nostalgia towards the janky telephones of years gone by, or maybe it’s just the sleek lines and juxtaposition of the latest technology with an icon of a bygone era that does it, but whatever the answer - these get the thumbs up from us. The standard models [including limited edition, above] cost $49.95 and the artist collaborations $54.95 - and both are available direct from the Yubz online shop. With the help of a simple adaptor [included] they plug straight into your mobile phone - or PC - and apparently their are many many benefits to using one, beyond the fact they’re radiation free…

This collaboration between Skateboard P and Atelier WM launched recently via the Billionaires Boys’ Club website. The handmade candle is life size, moulded from [not by] Pharrell’s own fair hands, and 1 of only 100 made. It comes in at $110, which is a fair cop for a candle, but that price guarantees you a certificate of authenticity [should you question who's hand it really is?]. Avialable here, or from Colette in Paris, should you be in the city of love…
